In the intricate tapestry of wellness, the spotlight often falls on a remarkable player – the gut. Beyond its role in digestion, the gut holds the key to a myriad of aspects influencing our overall health. The world of gut health is growing, and there are many reasons for that! This blog post will give you a better understanding and emphasize just how important a healthy gut is.
To talk about the gut, we must first understand what it is, what makes up the gut, and how it functions. Our gut is refereed as the GI (Gastrointestinal Tract) and takes care of hundreds of different functions. It is comprised of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.
The gut, and gut microbiome are two completely different entities, the gut microbiome or gut flora are the living microorganisms including bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses all found inside the digestive tract. There are over 100 trillion living micro flora inside our gut… this may be why we have to take good care of our gut! Maintaining a well-balanced gut flora or microbiome is essential for optimal gut functionality.
An unhealthy gut can be the cause of many different diseases and problems that are arising in ones day to day life. A couple signs of an unhealthy gut could be: skin issues, sugar cravings, constipation, brain fog, and diarrhea to name a few.
The magnificent thing about the body is that if we give it the proper nutrients and environment, the body can heal itself!
To get rid of those irritating symptoms of an unhealthy gut, and get it back into working shape, there are few things one must do. One of the most important things is going to be eliminating all irritants like refined sugar, alcohol, wheat, and most dairy, except for raw milk (We’ll get to that shortly). All of these things are extremely hard on the gut, so eliminating these from the diet (don’t worry not for forever) will speed up the process.
As stated above, the diet is of most importance when healing the gut. There are also some lifestyle changes one cane make like getting enough sleep, drinking clean water (half your body weight in ounces), meditation, and movement!
Moving to the good stuff: supplements, herbs, and foods that nourish the gut.
